ABOUT THE SITTING MONTH
Have you ever tried to recover from childbirth in just a week or two?
It’s a common belief, but often unrealistic. Many circles advocate a “4–5 days in bed, 4–5 days on the couch, 4–5 days out and about” approach. However, these timelines often collapse under the weight of postpartum depression, infection concerns, milk supply challenges, and, at times, cesarean birth recovery (major abdominal surgery), along with the lack of a “village” to manage household logistics and the immediate physical demands of newborn care. While staying horizontal can help reduce pelvic floor pressure and support uterine involution, medical recovery is rarely linear. True healing requires a flexible, symptom-based approach, where increased bleeding or pelvic “heaviness” signals the need to scale back activity—regardless of what day it is. Ultimately, the ability to follow any timeline depends less on willpower and more on having a dedicated support system to manage the outside world while the mother heals.
The initial 28 days postpartum are crucial for several reasons:
STREGTHEN IMMUNE FUNCTION
________
Immune System Strengthening: During pregnancy, a woman’s immune system is purposefully suppressed to prevent the body from rejecting the baby. Post-birth, this is the time to nourish and rebuild with teas to bolster immunity.
BLOOD REBUILDING
________
Blood Rebuilding: The loss of blood during labor can lead to anemia-like symptoms. Our course emphasizes foods and rest to prevent chronic fatigue by enhancing blood supply and iron levels naturally.
QI RESTORATION
________
Qi Restoration: Pregnancy and childbirth deplete qi, or life force energy. Through dedicated nutrition and rest, new mothers can replenish qi, achieving a balance that supports a healthier postpartum life.
WHY LAY DOWN?
________
In the first month post-birth, resting allows organs, which have shifted during pregnancy, to settle back into their natural positions. Encouraging new mothers to lay down is vital for allowing the organs to reposition and function optimally.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF BITTER/MEDICINAL TEAS?
________
During the critical 28-day period, drinking bitter teas helps to: - Strengthen the immune system. - Enhance lung capacity and cleanse organs. - Nourish the uterus and support its return to a balanced state.
WHY DO I NEED THIS COURSE?
________
Proper nourishment and rest encourage the uterus to expel all lochia (discharge), aiding its return to correct placement and size.
WHY DO I NEED A Postpartum Recovery course?
Too many women experience milk supply challenges, pelvic floor issues, and postpartum depression after giving birth. This course is designed to support postpartum recovery through traditional, time-tested practices rooted in the Sitting Month and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
A new mother needs nourishing foods, healing teas, and supported care.
With the Sitting Month Course, you’ll learn how to:
- Prepare and time herbal teas for postpartum healing based on TCM principles
- Choose warm, nourishing postpartum foods that support digestion and gut health
- Restore energy, balance, and internal warmth after birth
“This recovery, the 5th time around, has been completely different than it was with my other four,”
Brittany, a client with the Sitting Month
The Sitting Month: Better Postpartum Recovery Is Possible
After childbirth, a mother must restore internal warmth to prevent depletion and support full recovery. This course teaches how specific healing foods help the body avoid post-birth shock and rebuild strength naturally. You’ll cook with postpartum superfoods like goji berries, red dates, longan, ginger, and black fungus—ingredients known to support circulation, replenish nutrients, and promote healing, which in turn:
Supports healthy lactation and milk production
Encourages pelvic floor recovery and strength
Decreases chances of postpartum depression
Postpartum Recovery Support: Why You Need a Nurturer After Baby
A nurturer is someone dedicated to caring for a new mother, ensuring she feels supported and nurtured. This care is then naturally extended from the mother to her baby. Nurturers take charge of daily tasks like meal preparation and household chores, enabling new mothers to focus on recovery.
This is someone who provides hands-on support during recovery. A nurturer helps with:
- Meal preparation using healing recipes
- Light household tasks
- Creating a warm, restful environment
This support allows new mothers to fully focus on healing, bonding, and restoring their energy—creating a ripple effect of care that extends to the baby.
OUR MISSION Honoring the power of rest, community, restoring balance and feminine energy in the journey of motherhood, one mother at a time.
FIND NATURAL ENERGY BOOSTERS FOR NEW MOMS
Help mothers restore balance and energy through rest, community, and holistic postpartum recovery foods and teas.
At The Sitting Month LLC, we are dedicated to inspiring and educating communities of women to truly nourish, support, and care for new mothers. Our aim is to make *The Sitting Month* accessible to women across the United States. In a culture predominantly driven by masculine energy, we believe it’s time to pause and nurture the feminine essence within our society. This transformation begins with mothers. When a mother embraces rest and the power of slowing down, it profoundly benefits her, her baby, and her entire family, restoring balance. As the saying goes, “The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.”
There is a common misconception in American culture that a woman must struggle to regain her pre-pregnancy body. But back to what? This notion is misleading. Post childbirth, a woman’s body is inherently capable of being balanced, beautiful, strong, and brimming with vitality. It simply requires the right knowledge, which *The Sitting Month* course is designed to provide.
From one mother to another, we believe that women form a powerful community. By recognizing and supporting the profound process of creation, we can collectively become stronger. Our hope is for women to transition from competition to celebration of the extraordinary capacity of the female body to create life. Creation is a beautiful journey, and mothers know it well—the process is slow and intentional. Let’s follow nature’s cue and cultivate a period of rest and recovery for new mothers. Even if such support wasn’t extended to you, we encourage every woman to champion this change and support the next generation of mothers.
For me, the sitting month began when I met a really close friend. When we became friends, my oldest son was 16 months old and I was pregnant with my second son. My friend was pregnant with her second daughter and was preparing—along with her husband—to do the sitting month. Every time we were together, I asked her questions about what she was preparing and what I should be doing.
With her help, and with the support of friends and family, I was able to complete the sitting month with my second son. With each pregnancy after that, I asked this friend to assist me in doing the sitting month—four times in total. I followed her recommendations to rest, wear warm clothing, and delegate my normal tasks. I truly don’t think I would have five children if this friend hadn’t taught me about the sitting month and actively helped me through it. She has an incredible desire to make sure women are cared for after giving birth.
Through her example, I now understand what a huge accomplishment childbirth is for a woman’s body. When my first son was three months old, I had my appendix removed and also required surgery for a kidney stone. I believe those complications were due to not allowing my body enough time to recover after pregnancy. I’m excited to be able to share how to practice the sitting month with you.
